CVCC Riders Perform Well At BC Superweek

BC Superweek saw several CVCC riders do very well. In the pro men’s races Nigel Ellsay helped his Silber Pro Cycling team mates Ryan Roth and Matteo del Cin win Crit events . In the two road races , where Nigel is much more comfortable, he finished with the lead pack in 21st in the Tour de Delta. The whole lead group was given the same time of 3:29:22 over the 157.8 km course, an average speed of 45.22kmh. On the final day Peace Arch road race Nigel was in the lead break only to lose out in the sprint, finishing 4th on the hilly 134 km course.
In Cadet (U15) events Ben Katerberg and Isaac van der Vliet finished 2nd and 3rd at the UBC Grand Prix. Ben took another 2nd place at the Tour de White Rock and Isaac finished 4th. At the Tour de Delta both missed the podium finishing 4th and 6th. For Ben it was his first racing experience outside the Valley. Throughout the week Ben and Isaac really worked together as a team, gaining valuable experience for the future.

Gillian Ellsay returned from a very successful Tour de Rimouski to race in the final 3 events at Superweek. The UBC Grand Prix was her first event and she finished 64th in the Crit. She followed that up with a very respectable 49th coming in with the third group at the Gastown Grand Prix. In the final event the Tour de White Rock road race Gillian was 22nd.

The Tour de Rimouski is a 5 day event in Quebec that hosts riders from Canada, USA and Europe in Junior women (U19) and Cadet men (U17). Gillian Ellsay and Mark Grant represented the Comox Valley this year. Mark riding with the West Quebec Wheelers led his team across the line in 11th in the Team Trail event. Gillian riding with two USA girls and one other Canadian on Team Peleton crushed the opposition easily winning the Team Trial. On Day 3 these same four girls finished 1st – 4th in the Individual Time Trial, Gillian being 4th. Mark was easily the best of his team finishing 18th. In between the TT’s was a 78 km road race Grant came in 1:55 behind the leaders in 26th. Ellsay finished 8 seconds behind the winner, the same time as 13 others in her group. Day 4 was the Crit, Mark coming home in 20th. Gillian finished in 15th, again in the second group on the road behind the three leaders. Day 5 was another road race of 75.6 kms , with a big hill in the 18.9 km loop done 4 times. Gillian came home in 9th in the same time as the winner. Mark finished in 24th. In the overall standings, total time over the 5 days, Gillian was 4th, behind her 3 teammates and Mark 20th. Outstanding results for both in 70+ rider international fields.
